Just Swinging (More From Summer)

Growing up, my parents always had rope swings hanging from the trees to keep us occupied and playing outside. We frequently spent time climbing up and down the ropes, timing eachother to see who was the fastest. We played a lot of different games on these swings my dad hung for us.

Well, when we got to PA this summer my dad had two swings up just begging for grandkids to play on. And play they did. Um, there was also quite a bit of fighting over whose turn it was. Perhaps that is why there were 4 swings hanging from trees at any given time while I was growing up... my parents had simply gotten sick of the whining.

Tab's favorite swing was this one, with simply a stick stuck in a loop to hang on. He didn't quite grasp the concept of letting someone know before he was going to let go and so there were a few small incidents.

Abbie and Anna both enjoyed this swing, which we could never quite get right. The board was always crooked to one side or the other.

And I have no idea what happened with this picture, but I think it is pretty cool. Jarom spent quite a bit of his time playing with the kids on the swings.

Isn't it so much fun watching your kids play with your other siblings kids??? It's hard being a way from family sometimes...

As much as I appreciate the credit. I was really only involved in hanging 2 or 3 swings in all these years. After that they became self sustaining with the older kids taking responsibility for finding new places to hang the swings or rehanging them after they broke (usually to the current swinger's dismay).

In my opinion, the best swing was just a rope that was swung on like a Tarzan vine. We had at least one experience where one of the kid's friends, a "hot-shot" high school wrestler, was invited to swing on it and he couldn't handle it. Seems you don't have to engage in formal exercise in order to build upper body strength.
